What is the fine line in media reporting during actual battles during war.?

During engagements between US forces and enemy combatives, sometimes the media will show (pictures, or short footage) of troops in action. Most of the time, pictures or short footage do not show the exact details of what is going on and the end result; the military member gets in hot water trying to justify him/herself of all the WHYs. What is the fine line of media reporting during battles?
