Hawaii was a sovereign kingdom when in 1891, a group generally regarded to have US backing overthrew the monarchy and imprisoned the sitting Queen, Liliuokalani. Two years later, the Kingdom was dissolved, and in 1897 the US Government annexed Hawaii as a territory. Many believe the overthrow to have been illegal and done with the knowledge and cooperation of the US Government. Hawaii became a state in 1959.
